How We Built a Low-Cost Digital Signage Platform for Holiday Parks, Hotels and Restaurants
Digital signage has become an increasingly popular way for businesses to communicate with guests, customers and visitors. Whether it’s displaying guest WiFi information, promoting special offers, sharing local information or providing directions, digital screens can be a valuable addition to almost any customer-facing environment.
The challenge is that many commercial digital signage platforms come with significant costs. Hardware, licensing fees, subscription charges and ongoing management expenses can quickly make even a small deployment expensive.
Recently, we set ourselves a challenge. Could we create a digital signage platform that was affordable, reliable and simple to manage, while still offering the flexibility businesses need?
The answer was yes.
Starting with the Real Problem
Many businesses have information they want customers to see, but updating posters, printed notices and static displays can be time-consuming and inefficient.
Holiday parks often need to display:
- Guest WiFi details
- QR codes
- Local attractions
- Park information
- Emergency contact details
- Upcoming events
Hotels may want to display:
- Welcome information
- Restaurant opening times
- Event schedules
- Local recommendations
Restaurants often need a simple way to promote:
- Daily specials
- Events
- Seasonal menus
- Offers and promotions
The common challenge is keeping information current while managing multiple screens across different areas or locations.
Building a Flexible Platform
Rather than purchasing an off-the-shelf solution, we designed a custom platform built specifically around simplicity and reliability.
The system allows businesses to display:
- Guest WiFi information
- QR codes
- Weather updates
- Local information
- Promotional content
- Images and videos
- Rotating information screens
Content is managed through a simple administration portal, allowing updates to be made quickly without needing to access individual devices.
Centralised Management
One of the biggest design decisions was separating content management from content display.
Instead of every screen running its own copy of the application, we created a centralised architecture.
A single Master system manages:
- Content
- Images
- Videos
- Display layouts
- Configuration settings
Additional display devices simply connect to the Master and show the latest content.
This means a business can update multiple screens from a single location.
Need to change the guest WiFi password?
Update it once and every connected display updates automatically.
Need to promote an upcoming event?
Create the content once and push it to every screen.
This approach keeps management simple while making it easy to scale.
Keeping Hardware Costs Low
A major goal of the project was reducing hardware costs without sacrificing reliability.
The platform was designed to run on affordable hardware, including Raspberry Pi devices, while still delivering a smooth user experience.
By carefully optimising the software and removing unnecessary overhead, we were able to create a solution that performs well even on modest hardware.
For larger deployments, the Master system can also be hosted on a server, virtual machine, NAS device or cloud platform, providing additional flexibility and scalability.
Designed for Reliability
Digital signage is only useful if it remains available when customers need it.
For that reason, reliability was a core part of the design process.
The platform includes:
- Automatic startup after power loss
- Browser kiosk mode
- Automatic application recovery
- Centralised management
- Remote update capability
- Health monitoring
If power is interrupted, the device simply starts up again and returns directly to display mode without requiring user intervention.
The goal was to make the system behave more like an appliance than a computer.
Ready to Ship and Deploy
One of the most exciting outcomes of the project was how simple deployment became.
Display devices can be fully configured before shipping and sent directly to site ready for use.
The process is simple:
- Connect power
- Connect the display
- Connect to the network (or use pre-configured WiFi)
- The system automatically starts displaying content
There is no need to launch applications, log in to operating systems or perform complex configuration.
This makes the platform ideal for organisations operating across multiple sites, where ease of deployment is just as important as functionality.
A new display can be prepared, shipped and installed by a non-technical user within minutes.
Looking Ahead
The platform continues to evolve as new requirements emerge.
Future development plans include:
- Cloud-hosted management
- Multi-site administration
- Remote monitoring
- Automatic display discovery
- Enhanced scheduling
- Additional content integrations
- Synology and Docker deployments
What started as a simple signage project has developed into a flexible platform capable of supporting a wide range of customer-facing environments.
The Result
The finished platform provides a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional digital signage solutions.
Businesses can manage content centrally, deploy multiple displays, update screens remotely and expand as required without introducing significant hardware or licensing costs.
Most importantly, the solution was designed around real-world requirements. It is reliable, simple to deploy and practical to manage.
Whether used in a holiday park, hotel, restaurant, reception area or visitor attraction, the platform demonstrates that effective digital signage does not need to be expensive or complicated.
Sometimes the best solution is not the one with the biggest feature list. It’s the one that solves the problem simply, reliably and affordably
